November 2010

Pretty soon after the sun is up, I try and get out and do some exercise. On the way to the area where I run/speed walk, I can get a view of this great fountain on Place Felix Eboue with the morning light shining through it. I like it so much that one day I remembered to take my camera with me so I could get some shots.

Rather beautiful I think.

The water isn’t always running for some reason. Sometimes it is left running during a cold spell and the water gets frozen. They outline the fountain, lions and all, in lights at Christmas which is really lovely.

Eight lions ring around the center section “roaring” water.

Wasn’t that the title of a book or a movie? In any case, I have more photos from my sunny day at Pere Lachase.

This goddess used to be plain gray. I’m not sure who painted her this golden color but I like it.

This unusual tomb was new to me too. It said, “Viva la Revolution” in another area.

The roots of trees can do some serious damage to tombs.

I love this weeping goddess. I saw it in a book a long time ago and, I’m not sure how, I managed to find it where it sits below the tomb of Chopin.

The flower beds are done really nicely here. I don’t know if you can see it, but the Eiffel Tower is far in the background. Pere Lachase sits on a hill which is probably why I could see the tower.

November 1st is All Saint’s Day in France, a time when many people visit cemteries to stop at tombs of those who have passed on. The cemeteries are full of flowers-mums especially-and it’s a visual feast to wander through Pere Lachase. I wanted to visit there on November 1st but Maurice and I were finishing painting a room and by the time I cleaned the floors and we replaced the furniture, I was out of energy so I didn’t make it until a few days later but there were fewer people and the sun shown on the trees with their golden leaves and it was a joy to wander among the graves enjoying life with reminders all around of how fast time goes.

Rows of mums lining a walkway with a shower of golden leaves along side.

At rest.

Autumn trees illuminated in the sunshine.

This was a new tomb to me-I’m usually in the same areas.

Maurice used to tell me that November can be very warm here in Paris and, so far, he’s been right. It was almost up to 70 yesterday. I put on a light coat and my most summery scarf before venturing outside. The other day I met a friend at the famous Tea shop, Marriage Freres. They have very nice teas and incredible desserts and light lunches too. I like to take people in here to have a look around and to just breath in the wonderful fragrance. The waiters (never have seen a woman except at the checkout area-hmm) wear vests and cute white bow ties. It was so warm we both ordered their ice tea.

They bring this interesting book along with the menu. It’s full of fascinating facts about tea. What a history this drink has. You can buy it here at the store too.

The tea comes in these enormous glasses and there is usually actually enough ice, not always easy to find in France. I had Marco Polo Red-I love the fruity flavor-and my friend had a “white” tea, Esprit de Noel. It’s not cheap to have tea here though. You will have sticker shock when you get your bill.

I loved the shape of their sugar bowl so much that I bought one. I also got the cute little spoon but we never use it as Maurice only uses sugar cubes in his tea and coffee and I use little tablets of a sugar substitute. I bring it out for company though along with the sweet little round milk pot.

They’ve been working for years on the two columns in Nation and finally the scaffolding is coming down. What an incredible job they did. It looks fabulous.

There was an incredible sunset going on and the columns were lit up in a pink glow.

Doesn’t this look wonderful?

It was worth the wait.
