The Highlight

Did you know that you can get from Paris to Venice in just a little over an hour? That’s what we did via Easy Jet for a perfect weekend getaway. You can also take an over-night train from Paris to Venice. Venice is always such a wonderful place and I love walking around each neighborhood exploring but this time my husband and I took a tour with City Wonders and it turned out to be the highlight of our stay in Venice. We did the Secret Venice By Night tour and enjoyed it so much.

Our guide was Andrea, a local. He was fun and informative. We heard about the building of Venice and some of its history and then he took us on a tour of Dorsodura, a less well known area of Venice.

A shop making and repairing Gondolas. They cost as much as a car.

Look at this! It was a renouncing sculpture. Venice was horrible visited by the Black Plague twice. The city even had islands used for isolating sick people. If you happened to see a sick neighbor around the neighborhood hoping to escape isolation you would put his name on a piece of paper and put it in the mouth of the sculpture. That way your neighbor wouldn’t know it was you who reported him.

We saw some lovely gardens and flowers as we walked along.

The walking part of the tour ended at this lovely church, Saint Maria della Salute.

The figure is Fortune and wind changes its direction, as in life.

At the end, we were given a gondola ride up the smooth canals. How nice to glide along as the sun set and the windows began to have lights turned on inside. We ended up at Saint Mark’s Square with a short walk to our hotel.

I highly recommend City Wonders Tours They give tours all over the world, including in Paris.

  1. You know, we’ve never done any of those walking tours but now I think we should consider it.

There is one of those renouncing sculptures in the Doge’s Palace. How awful to think that someone could anonymously accuse someone of something and land them in prison. The Black Plague situation is more understandable to me.

  2. – I love having baetsks by the door! Right now we only have two need to get a bigger bench and tuck some more in there. Ours still have summer stuff in them too. Hopefully for a little while longer!September 27, 2011 2:18 pm
