Nearby Place de la République where I went to see the memorial set up to commemorate and remember the victims of the terrorist attacks is the Canal Saint Martin. They empty it of water every fourteen years to clean it and find all sort of debri such as bikes and grocery carts. They emptied it a few weeks before we returned and I wanted to see it.

Here it is last summer.

Here is the same view with the canal empty.

In another section it has been cleaned and it looks like they are putting some sort of tar on the bottom.

On the way to the canal I saw this graffiti, a sort of bejeweled Star Wars helmet. It caught my eye anyway.

  1. Fascinating that they emptied the canal . They have just emptied a lake I think in Regents park. London. Bit of tip at the bottom 🙁
