Book Store

While in Porto I read of a famous bookstore called the Livraria Lello, one of the oldest bookstores in Portugal. I  love old bookstores. It’s known for its beauty but also for the fact that J.K. Rowling sat upstairs while writing some of her Harry Potter books and apparently there is a library in the series based on this bookstore. This fact has made the place extremely popular. I never could get into Harry Potter. I’m not that much a fan of science fiction and the first movie bored me silly. It is so popular that you have to go up the street a bit and buy a 4 Euro entry ticket. If you bought a book, and I did, you get a discount with the entry ticket. My 13 Euro book was 11 Euros thanks to that. It’s a small place and it was packed. It was, indeed, beautiful.

The exterior.

As you enter.

Underneath the lovely staircase.

The concrete stairs are red. I’m not sure if they have always been so.

I liked this curve of the stairs.

The stained glass up above.

  1. This is wonderful! What a beautiful book store. As for Harry Potter, the books are amazing, each better than the last. The films are good, but not as great as the books. Just my two cents. P.S. I know a lovely woman here, who lived in Porto at the same time, and is a very close friend of JKR 🙂

  2. If you want to see an even more amazing library go to the one in Coimbra, Portugal – just google Coimbra library and click on images. There must be other places in Portugal that also have amazing libraries – they do have a lot of history there.

  3. Even if you have to buy an entry ticket, I’m all in favor of anything that gets people into bookstores, especially these days. That place looks so very interesting.

  4. I was like you when Harry Potter first came out. My boss kept telling me I should read the first book which he had been convinced to read by his daughter. After politely declining several times, he brought the book in and put it on my desk and said “just read the first page”. Well, I did, and didn’t do any more work that day. I’ve read all of the books and, as an earlier commenter said, each one is better than the previous. Also agree with that commenter, that the movies can’t compare.

And that book store is beautiful! Thank you so much for those photos.
